Droga do domu?

Sex, czyli płeć biologiczna i gender, czyli płeć kulturowa. Catcalling – not wanted, not a compliment

By now you probably have seen or at least have heard of the viral video capturing 108 catcalls to a woman silently walking the streets of NYC. If you haven't yet, you definitely should! Each of the comments from the strangers is a catcall - a comment that objectifies and sexualizes a woman. That includes seemingly polite statements such as "smile" and "hello". Women face disrespectful and threatening comments on daily basis and the video proves just how common this is. The issue impacts most women at some point, for further proof consider the research below from the organization Stop Street Harassment. In some cities like Indianapolis and California Bay Area the percentage of women who have experienced street harassment is 100%! Why is catcalling not an attempt to be nice? ...

Victorian England in the making: how did technology create a new society – a lecture by Ms. Ewa Wohner

On the 16th October students from IB1 and some from pre-IB attended a lecture titled "Victorian England in the making: how did technology create a new society" and delivered by one of our English teachers - Ms. Ewa Wohner. The original presentation consisted of 64 slides – regretfully, we did not manage to listen to the whole of it due to lack of time. The lecture was based mostly on a book – The Victorians by Jeremy Paxman. Victorian contrasts First, we heard about industrialism and the industrial revolution as well as learned how it was depicted in books, such as The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot (1860), and paintings (e.g. Manchester from Cliff, Higher Broughton by William Wyld (1852)). While some artists tried to show Victorian England as a cheerfull, bright place, t...

The road to war in the Gulf 1990-1991

The Gulf War fought in 1990 – 1991, was the first conflict to take place in the new international order, following the end of the Cold War. It was also the first major conflict that the USA had undertaken since Vietnam. It was unique because of several reasons. For the first time ever, the UN had the support of both superpowers – Russia and United States in allowing the military invasion on the one country of the UN members. Also it was unique because it was the first such a situation that US, together with 10 Arab countries, allied against another Arab state. This unprecedented confrontation was caused by many complex reasons and resulted in consequence that has changed the whole Future of Middle East and US relations with Iraq. The major reason for the Gulf War was the politics o...
