Are we, Gen Z, Becoming A Fragile Generation?

My generation has grown up in a world of constant technological advancements, social media influence, and a what-so-peaceful one. Generation Z, also known as the iGeneration, is the demographic group following the Millennials. Born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s and with our unique upbringing, there has been a growing concern about the overall health of our generation, both mental and physical. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, Gen Z is the most stressed generation, with 91% of us reporting symptoms of anxiety and depression (APA, 2023). Similarly, various studies have shown that there are “declining health trends in recent generations” (Zheng, 2021), our generation showing increases in metabolic syndrome as the main culprit. This is a signifi...

105 years of Polish Women’s suffrage

November 28th marks a historic milestone of over a century of women’s voting rights in Poland, a relentless journey of empowerment and societal transformation. Delving into the triumphant struggle and profound impact of women’s suffrage in Poland unveils a narrative of resilience, activism, and the enduring pursuit of equality. Demands for equal rights This hard-fought achievement traces back to the 19th century, when Polish women, inspired by the movements in other countries around the world, began their fight for equality among genders. Polish women, in a then, non-existent Poland, started voicing their demands for equal rights. That, however, was much more complicated than for the suffragettes abroad. Foreign women applied pressure on their respective governments, whereas Poles...
Why internships are valuable for high school students: my experience at the Skanska training program.

Why internships are valuable for high school students: my experience at the Skanska training program.

In the United States 62.1% of people have professions unrelated to their field of study and only 27.3% work in the field they majored in. I always wanted to pursue a career in business, however I never actually visited an office or participated in business meetings or projects. That is why I used the opportunity given by the school and, along with students from DP 1 and DP 2, I attended a 2 week long internship at Skanska, one of the biggest construction and development companies worldwide. What have I learned and what have I found surprising? Despite the fact that I knew I wanted to study a course related to business and management, I never knew what work in a company or organization actually looks like. Firstly I learned how meetings with brokers look like and that instead of clien...

Exploiting Victimhood for Personal Gain – Why Some Use Victimhood as a Means of Gaining Attention and Sympathy

Professional victims on social media have become a pervasive presence in recent years. These individuals are often adept at using their victimhood as a means of gaining attention, sympathy, and even financial gain. They can be found across all social media platforms, from Instagram and Twitter to TikTok and Facebook. Who are professional victims? Professional victims are defined by their tendency to cast themselves as perpetual victims, no matter what the situation. They often see themselves as the protagonists in a never-ending cycle of suffering, and they use their social media accounts to share their struggles with the world. While it's important to acknowledge and support those who have experienced trauma or adversity, professional victims take it to another level, exploiting...

Pursuit of Happyness [film review]

For this months creativity part of my CAS I decided to write a film review. The movie I chose is “Pursuit of Happyness” based on Chris Gardeners’ real life story, directed by Gabrielle Muccino. The main role (of Chris Gardner) was brilliantly played by Will Smith. I chose this film as it discusses family values in an unconventional way that leaves the watcher truly moved by the touching message. Pursuit of happyness is a movie from 2006 in the genre of drama. It tells about characters who stand together on a journey of Poverty in a highly industrialised world. The plot tells of a single father that struggles to make ends meet for him and his son. He is the creator of a new medical machine invented by him, but unfortunately he repeatedly fails to advertise and sell this device. ...

Fondation Louis Vuitton

The Fondation Louis Vuitton is based in Paris, France, it opened in 2014 and was sponsored by the Louis Vuitton corporation. The building was designed by an American architect Frank Gary in the deconstructivism style. Although the initial budget was 100 million euros, the actual cost was 780 million euros, almost 8 times more than budgeted. The museum is perfect for modern and contemporary art lovers. The exhibitions in the museums are temporary and change twice a year. But what does not change is the architecture of the building which continues to amaze the visitors. The complex structure of the museum, the mirrored pathway leading to the stair fountain and the tarrase with a panoramic view on the city of Paris all create a sense that the building and its integral parts are the...

Carlists – Spanish monarchists who fought against the Crown. Part I – Carlist wars.

1872-1876 was the period of civil war in Spain. The liberal government was initially monarchist, then republican, then again monarchist. And who were the rebels? They were led by a relatively young prince, who wanted to become the new king of Spain. The fact that his cousin already held this position didn’t matter, because for this prince and his supporters known as Carlists, he was the only legitimate person to rule over his fatherland. They were very determined to do so, because it was the third time already when Carlists challenged the government in Madrid. Dispute over the Salic law Year 1833 was remembered as the year when king Ferdinand VII Bourbon died. If he had had a son, the late ruler would have probably been remembered just as a king who ruled during the Napoleoni...

The Pilots of the Six-Day War

Almost 60 years ago Egypt had closed the strait of Tiran, essentially backing Israel into a corner. Following these escalations, Israel had to hit back. Operation Focus On the early morning of the 5th of June 1967, at around 07:45am, Israeli fighter pilots carried out Operation Focus, a series of bombing strikes against the Egyptian Air Force. It resulted in the Egyptian Air Force suffering devastating losses, by noon the Egyptian Air Force and its allies Jordan and Syria were almost completely immobilized. Some losses were estimated to be around 18 airfields and up to 450 aircraft. Three waves of attacks Operation Focus was made up of three waves. The first of which carried out attacks on 11 bases, catching the majority of the Egyptian Air Force on the ground. Th...

Journey to the Tatra mountains

On May the 4th at 8 o’clock in the morning when most of the senior students all over Poland were preparing for their Finale exams, MYP1 from Raszyńska IB started a long journey towards the misty mountains – Tatras. Comfortable buses with air conditioners and smiling drivers took us first to the nearest McDonald's outside Warsaw. We were more than happy to taste the multi ingredients fries and very far from “sugar free” milkshakes. First stop – Tyniec Our first stop, after McDonald’s of course, was in the benedictine abbey in Tyniec. It was a very interesting experience, some people were enjoying the around 1000 years old buildings, while others preferred to relax in a medieval, fortunately not working, hearth. However, the time was calling and most of us were also quite t...

Should we counter misinformation?

Misinformation has been a vast and challenging issue throughout recent years, with the potential threat of it occurring only increasing. The impact of misleading information has been raised into the public attention especially in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, with numerous hazardous unscientific practices and conspiracy theories gaining track. Additionally, it is not unknown that deception can be used for malicious purposes – both by governments and individuals. Authoritarian states such as Russia and China utilised disinformation related to COVID-19 in order to achieve political gains, as described by the Center for European Policy Analysis (Dubow, Lucas, and Morris, 2021). Conclusively, it seems the discussion on the topic is urgent and needed, if not inevitable. Some ma...
